Thirty years ago, California Swap Meets and Flea Markets were faced
with a barrage of regulations imposed by City, County, and State governments.
It was "open season" on Swap Meets and Flea Markets because
they were not considered a "legitimate" business.
A number of Swap Meet owners throughout the state
came together in an organized voice, defending our industry by educating
elected officials and the public. As a result, the CALIFORNIA SWAP
MEET ASSOCIATION (CSMA) was formed in 1973. The CSMA worked diligently
to improve the image of the Swap Meet industry throughout the State.
Over the years the CSMA has interacted with numerous elected officials,
government and regulatory agencies, developing long term relationships
with many. The CSMA was, and is, a direct conduit of communication
with these diverse groups. In several instances, CSMA has successfully
influenced favorable outcomes on legislative issues.
